WHAT IS A “SPA” GROUP?
Compeer’s SPA group is made up of Compeer friends and volunteers interested in being a part of a cooperative craft-producing environment. Group members engage in open and supportive social interaction while working toward completing a production goal. Whether making jewelry, sewing therapeutic eye pillows, or sharing artistic or creative writing skills, individuals engage in the group production of a completed product. Through their work, members develop skills transferrable to support success in the community, as well as develop a social sense of belonging and camaraderie with their peers. All donations received in return for our bracelets are put toward purchasing supplies for future groups-- we are self-sustaining!
The simple answer is YES. It has been long understood in the fields of psychology, occupational therapy, art therapy, and neurology that group work benefits both the physical and mental health of participants. Compeer matches are based on the fact that friendship and social interaction is healing in and of itself. Our SPA groups blend these theories in an effort to bring motivation, validation, social support and a sense of purpose to the lives of its members in a sustainable way.

Hello all..Im so NOT creative..haha..but here I go. Id say about 3 years ago my really good friends at the time Matt and Becca decided that they were going to move from Buffalo to Florida with their two daughters and little dog Roxie. They needed help packing and then driving the family van and the moving truck to Florida. So I volunteered to pack them up and drive down with them. Matt and I in the moving truck and Becca, the girls and the dog in the van. We got to Florida at night time and we unloaded just enough to sleep that night. We then woke up nice and early and unpacked the rest of the truck. I ended up staying down there with them for almost a week as per I was on a long vacation. I flew back on my own dime and they were so very thankful for the help I offered and gave. About a month later I get a call from my still really good friend Becca stating that they wanted to move back to Buffalo and that they had, had it with the south and missed home. So again I volunteered to fly down, pack them up and drive back to Buffalo. At first they said no way, they would never ask for me to do all that work for them. But thats just the way I am. Always there for a friend or family in need. So I flew down to Florida, packed them up and this time drove the van with Becca and the girls and the dog. This ride was much worse because their older daughter was so sick that she threw up every hour it seemed. The van smelled like food from all the fast food places we stopped at and throw-up. But we made it back to Buffalo safe and sound and they were forever greatful for what I had done for them. To me it was nothing. I never expecting like money or any thanks from them. I just wanted to help! I grew closer with their daughters and them and that was all the payment I needed. I still talk to Becca and go and visit her and her kids when I can. The End!
My favorite friend moment was when my Best Friend Tracy had her baby during the middle of the night. Only family was allowed in to see her. I said I was her sister even thou she is blond hair and I m dark brown . Well they let me in and I got hold her new baby girl before dawn and watch the new beginning of life. tracy always says I was there for her from the begging. Somethings are just to preciouys to miss. Her daughter is now 18. Boy does time fly!
I am blessed by the best friends --- friends who have my back and redeem me everyday! As an only child, I grew up with a ton of self-reliance, independence and alone time - but nothing compares to having friends (who have truly become my sisters and brothers) to share life's highs and lows with.
My biggest and best friend moment came when I found myself unexpectedly expecting my third child. The love and support as I struggled and then found joy were what got my through. Friends who are there in the worst of times make them the best of times.

An important friendship moment I have goes all the way back to first grade. Because I was a "good girl" I was assigned to work next to and with Shannon, another first grader who had CP and MR. We quickly became friends, and I was able to teach her how to sled on the playgroud at recess, since she could drag herself on her snow pants through the snow and leave her wheelchair behind. She left my school afterfirst grade to go to a different foster home, but a few years later her mom somehow tracked us down and we got to go see her doing really well with her foster family, since their bio daughter also had CP. I think back to those days when I wonder how I ended up running group homes for the developementally disabled for a living!
